It Was In the Cards

By: Mike Rifkin

For the first time since 2015 the Arizona Cardinals are 3-0 as they defeated the Jaguars 31-19. Coincidentally 2015 is also the last time the Cardinals made the playoffs. It is weird to say that a 2-0 team was in a must win situation, but the Cardinals were in that situation. The two main reasons being they were 2-0 last season before losing to the Lions and that one game can be the difference between making and missing the playoffs. The other reason is that the upcoming schedule gets difficult for the Cardinals.

At the end of the first half the Cardinals attempted a 68 yard field goal, not only did it miss but Jamal Agnew returned it 109 yards for a touchdown. But as they did last week the Cardinals battled back in the second half. They were led by free agent acquisitions as James Conner had two rushing touchdowns and AJ Green had 112 receiving yards. But the most instrumental might have been JJ Watt who pressured rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence into throwing an interception to Byron Murphy which was returned for a touchdown. Murphy had two interceptions on the day and they were two of the four the Cardinals defense forced. Murphy is off to a tremendous start to his season. Through three games he has 11 tackles, 5 passes defended and yesterday he got his first two interceptions of the season.

Quarterback Kyler Murray threw for 316 yards and had a rushing touchdown in the win for the Cardinals. The Cardinals will now open up divisional play as they go to Los Angeles to play the 3-0 Rams, followed up by games against the 49ers and Browns. It was imperative that the Cardinals got off to a hot start and they have. Now let’s see how they fare against some of the heavyweights in the NFL.
