In Wednesday’s loss to the Golden Knights, Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin scored twice giving him 50 on the season. It is the ninth time in Ovechkin’s career that he has reached the 50 goal mark, the only other two players in NHL history to have achieved this were Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy. With Ovechkin hitting 50 he is now 114 goals behind Wayne Gretzky’s all time mark of 894 and 21 behind Gordie Howe. Outside of last season where he had 24 Ovechkin had hit the 30 goal mark since he came into the NHL in 2005-06 season. It is truly remarkable the season Ovechkin is having at age 36. If Ovechkin can stay healthy which he has for most of his career he will break Gretzky’s record but appreciate the greatness while it is still going strong. Ovechkin and his Capitals will be looking to capture their second Stanley Cup.
