Thanksgiving Showdown

By : Mike Rifkin

In recent years, there has been a third Thanksgiving game added to the slate, and 2022 is no different. Two teams with their eyes on the playoffs will meet as the New England Patriots take on the Minnesota Vikings in Minnesota.

The Patriots are coming off a 10-3 win over the New York Jets. They won the game with five seconds left in the fourth quarter, when Marcus Jones returned a punt 84 yards to break the 3-3 tie. The Patriot defense held the Jets to six first downs, 103 total yards (2 in the second half) and three points. They sacked Zach Wilson four times, 1.5 of them came from Matthew Judon who leads the NFL with 13 on the season.

In the win Mac Jones was 23-27 for 246 yards and was sacked six times. The Patriots ran the ball for 99 yards and averaged 3.8 yards per carry including Damien Harris averaging 8.1 yards per carry. New England now sits with a record of 6-4 on the season.

The Vikings on the other hand got absolutely smoked by the Cowboys 40-3. The loss snapped the Vikings seven game winning streak. Kirk Cousins threw for 105 yards and was sacked seven times. Justin Jefferson was held to three catches and 33 yards. The Cowboys averaged 6.5 yards per play totaling 458 yards for the game. Tony Pollard had 189 total yards and two touchdowns in the Cowboys win. The Vikings were due for one of these games, but their saving grace is that nobody in the NFC North is close to them right now.

Two playoff hopefuls meet in a very important game on Thanksgiving night. Will the Patriots push their win streak to three or will the Vikings right the ship after getting blasted on Sunday.
