A Glimpse Into The Future

By: Mike Rifkin

September first means roster expansion across Major League Baseball. For teams out of the playoff picture, that means young prospects will get their opportunity to show their front office what the future may hold.

Multiple reports say the Mets are recalling third baseman Brett Baty from Triple-A and calling up Ronny Mauricio. Mauricio at Triple-A Syracuse has a slash line of .292/.346/.506 with 23 home runs and 71 RBI. Baty was hitting .161 over his last 30 games before being sent to Syracuse. In Syracuse, Baty had a slash line of .298/.390/.507 with ten home runs in 104 at-bats.

Having Baty and Mauricio join Francisco Alvarez and Mark Vientos, this was the Mets’ top four prospects in 2022. If the Mets want to glimpse what 2024 can look like, all four of these guys could be added to a core featuring Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor. It should include Pete Alonso, but that’s another conversation. But September will be about evaluating some of the Mets’ top prospects.
