In two days, the NFL returns with the NFL Draft. It is a big night for the college players who registered and declared themselves eligible to be drafted. With the pandemic still in full swing, we see fewer possible draft picks attending live for the draft. Many players want to be home with friends and loved ones.
The draft makes these players so uneasy because they are picked to go a specific number, doesn’t mean that will happen. The draft is like playing a game of keno. So many different possibilities, and one wrong number loses you your prize. So, take a player like Randy Moss. He was projected to go in the top 3 picks in his year; however, off-field troubles caused him to drop to #20. One wrong pick screws up the prizes for other teams. The players don’t know until a few minutes before they will be drafted to and by which team. The players get a call from the owner and head coach usually. The tension is so thick in that room from the first minute to the last that you need a chainsaw to cut through it.
Some draftees are getting ready to head to Nevada, and others will be seen from their homes or even colleges they played at. It will be a fun night, and I expect to have as many as four possible trades this first round, with the Jets being the center of the talks. I wish the draftees good luck and great success in the NFL, and that is how the old man sees it.
