So yesterday was the running of the 148th Kentucky Derby at beautiful Churchill Downs. The weather was great, the track was fast, and Epicenter and his Jockey were the favorites to win this race. Epicenter raced towards the lead and held it for most of the race right out of the gate. Rich Strike, an 80-1 odds to win, was at the back of the pack and began moving up. At the halfway point, epicenter was at the front, while Rich Strike was in 8th. Then after the half-mile, a huge lane along the rail opened up, and Rich Strike and his Jockey Sonny Leon pushed and moved up four spots going into the clubhouse turn. Rich Strike had all the room to do what he did next. Leon pushed Rich Strike even more and moved him to the outside of Epicenter and Zandon and turned on the jets, and a fantastic sports feat happened. Rich Strike did something in the entire race history (148 years) that no horse had done before. Rich Strike becomes the first long shot ever to win the Derby. This was a remarkable sight to watch. However, there was a lot of money lost at Churchill Downs yesterday.
